What Is HEIC?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. Apple adopted it as the default capture format in iOS 11 (2017) and macOS High Sierra because it cuts photo file sizes roughly in half compared to JPEG — without a visible drop in quality.
Under the hood, HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) codec. That same technology also enables features JPG can’t match: 10-bit color depth, HDR metadata, transparency, and even animated image sequences stored in a single file.
Why Convert HEIC to JPG?
Despite its technical advantages, HEIC has a compatibility problem: it’s an Apple-centric format. When you share a HEIC photo with someone on Windows, Android, or a non-Apple app, they may see an error or a blank thumbnail.
Common situations where you need JPG instead of HEIC:
- Uploading to a website or e-commerce platform
- Sending photos by email or messaging app
- Opening in older photo editors (Photoshop versions before CC 2021, for example)
- Printing at a lab that doesn’t accept HEIC
- Sharing on social media platforms with patchy HEIC support

Quality Considerations
When converting HEIC to JPG, you’re moving from a 10-bit HEVC file to an 8-bit DCT-based format. In practice this means:
- A small quality ceiling is introduced. JPG can’t represent the full HDR range of a HEIC captured in ProRAW mode, but for standard photos taken in default camera settings the difference is invisible at normal viewing sizes.
- Set quality to 85–90 %. This is the sweet spot for web and email use: visually lossless to the naked eye, with file sizes 40–60 % smaller than a quality-100 export.
- Don’t re-compress repeatedly. Each HEIC→JPG conversion introduces generation loss. Convert once and keep the JPG as your working copy.
Compatibility Notes
| Platform | HEIC support | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | With codec from MS Store | Convert to JPG for broad compatibility |
| macOS 13+ | Native | Either format works |
| Android 9+ | Partial (Samsung/Google) | Convert to JPG to be safe |
| Web browsers | None (Chrome/Firefox/Edge) | Always convert before embedding |
Once you’ve converted, browse the guides section for tips on resizing and compressing your JPGs for web use.
FAQ
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's image format introduced in iOS 11. It stores photos using the HEVC codec, which achieves roughly twice the compression of JPEG at equivalent visual quality.
Why do iPhones use HEIC instead of JPG?
iPhones switched to HEIC by default to save storage. A HEIC photo is typically half the size of a comparable JPG while preserving the same perceived quality, so more photos fit on the same device.
Is HEIC better quality than JPG?
Technically yes — HEIC supports higher bit depth (10-bit vs 8-bit), wider color gamuts, and HDR metadata. For everyday photos the visual difference is subtle, but HEIC's smaller file size is a real advantage.
Can Windows open HEIC files without converting?
Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files after installing the free HEIF Image Extensions codec from the Microsoft Store. However, many apps — including older editors and email clients — still don't support it, making conversion to JPG more practical.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality?
Use a browser-based converter like ImgKit that runs the conversion locally. Avoid re-compressing at very low quality settings; a JPG quality of 85–90 % preserves all visible detail while keeping file sizes reasonable.
