How to Sell a Source-Code Case Study Before Your SaaS Is Fully Mature
A practical framework for turning a real MVP build into a paid educational product without pretending the software is more mature than it is.
A SaaS can be useful before it is mature enough to sell as software. That creates a launch problem: you have real work, real code, and real lessons, but the product may not be ready for subscription promises, support obligations, or broad user expectations.
One option is to sell the build as a source-code case study.
That is what ImgKit chose for its first paid product.
The Honest Trigger
ImgKit had free browser tools, content pages, protected downloads, Stripe foundations, local Pro workflows, and an Electron desktop beta. The product was real.
But the desktop software was still beta. A commercial desktop app needs signed builds, update confidence, install trust, support docs, and clear buyer expectations. Selling that too early would create the wrong pressure.
The build process, however, was already valuable.
What A Case Study Can Sell
A strong source-code case study sells practical learning:
- how the product was framed;
- how the repository is organized;
- how authentication and paid access work;
- how protected downloads are delivered;
- how checkout and webhooks are shaped;
- what was postponed and why;
- what AI coding did well and where human judgment mattered.
That is different from selling a template. A template says “start here.” A case study says “study what happened here.”
What To Include
The minimum useful package should include:
- A clean source-code snapshot.
- A setup and environment guide.
- Written modules that explain the build.
- Architecture notes.
- Product and pricing decisions.
- A buyer README.
- Clear license and disclaimer language.
- Known limitations.
If videos come later, they should support the package, not replace the source and notes.
What Not To Promise
Do not sell a source-code case study as if it were:
- a finished SaaS template;
- private production credentials;
- guaranteed deployment support;
- a signed desktop app;
- a consulting contract;
- a shortcut around product judgment.
That clarity protects both the buyer and the maker.
Why Pricing Can Be Simple
For an MVP, a one-time price is easier to understand than a subscription. ImgKit chose $49 because the first package is compact: source snapshot, modules, prompts, setup notes, and launch decisions.
The price can change later as the product gains videos, updates, examples, or deeper walkthroughs. The first sale should test whether builders value the material.
Where To Place The CTA
A case study should be promoted where intent already exists:
- product pages about the underlying app;
- pricing pages;
- build-in-public posts;
- technical articles about the stack;
- founder notes explaining the pivot;
- videos that summarize what the buyer gets.
ImgKit previously linked the Builder Case Study from its public pages, but that standalone offer is now archived while the active paid path focuses on Gift Studio.
The Core Rule
Sell the part that is already valuable. Be direct about what is not mature yet.
For ImgKit, that briefly meant keeping desktop software in beta and selling the real build record first. The build record is now archived rather than sold.
FAQ
Is selling a case study easier than selling SaaS?
It can be easier to support because buyers expect learning material, source, and decisions rather than a fully hosted service with uptime guarantees.
What should be included in a source-code case study?
Include source, setup notes, architecture decisions, launch context, limitations, and a clear support scope.
Should you hide the product's rough edges?
No. The rough edges are part of the learning value if they are explained honestly.
